Kandy Festival Tour (10 Days)

Day 01 – Airport / Colombo

On arrival in Sri Lanka you will be met and assisted by our Airport Representative, who will direct you to your Chauffeur-guide. Transfer to Mount Lavinia on the border of Colombo. Check in to the hotel, relax and recover from any jet lag.

Once you have rested, commence a city tour in Colombo. Drive through the commercial and city centre area known as the “Fort” and Pettah, built by the Portuguese in the 16th century where grand colonial era buildings stand alongside modern office structures. Drive past the Town hall, the Independence Square, Cinnamon Gardens and Galleface Green. Visit the Gangarama Buddhist temple and the Sri Kailasanathar Swamy Devasthanam Hindu Kovil to experience the diversity of religion, ethnicity and customs of the people.

Return to the hotel in Mt Lavinia. Alternatively you may indulge in some shopping.

Day 02 – Dambulla

After breakfast check out of the hotel. Proceed to Dambulla. Check in to the hotel in Dambulla.

In the afternoon leave for Minneriya for a Jeep Safari. Minneriya National Park is about 8889 hectares in extent and is an ideal eco-tourism location in Sri Lanka. It is home to Sri Lanka’s favorites such as spotted deer, Sambar, Sloth bear and elephants.

Drive back to the hotel in Dambulla.

Day 03 – Sigiriya / Matale / Kandy

After breakfast climb the rock fortress of Sigiriya – a 5th Century “Fortress in the Sky”. Built by King Kassapa the fortress was a Royal Citadel for more than 18 years. Sigiriya, also called the lion rock (A UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SIGHT) rises 200 metres above the scrub jungle around. The base of the rock is ringed by a moat and rampart and extensive gardens including the renowned water gardens. The majestic Lion’s Paw picturesquely guards the stairway of the palace on the summit. See the famous frescoes of the “Heavenly maidens” of Sigiriya in a sheltered pocket of the rock and the 10 foot high Mirror Wall.

Upon completion return to the hotel, pack luggage and check out. Transfer to Kandy.

Head on to the bustling hill capital of Kandy. En route, visit the Spice gardens in Matale. Check in to your hotel on arrival in Kandy.

Kandy, the bustling hill country capital is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is famous for the Temple of the Tooth which houses the most sacred religious relic, the tooth of the Buddha and the Kandy Lake built in 1807 which is an attractive centerpiece to the town and the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens.

After a short break, commence a city tour: visit the sacred Temple of Tooth Relic, also called as «Daladá Máligáwa». Monks of the two chapters of «Malwatte» and «Asgiriya» conduct daily worship in the inner chamber of the temple. Rituals are performed three times daily: at dawn, at noon and in the evenings. On Wednesdays there is a symbolic bathing of the Sacred Relic with an herbal preparation made from scented water and fragrant flowers. This holy water is believed to contain healing powers and is distributed among those present. Visit the centuries old Devales (shrines) built around the Temple for local deities as well.

Thereafter take an upper-lake drive to the top of the hill where a bird’s eye view opens of the city below and the man-made Kandy Lake known as the Kiri Muhuda or the Milky Ocean, Kandy garrison Cemetery and the gem museum.

Day 04 – Pinnawala / Peradeniya / Kandy

After breakfast leave for Pinnawala. Visit the Elephant orphanage. This orphanage was set up by the government to take care of baby elephants lost or abandoned in the wild. Witness the feeding of the elephants. Thereafter observe them as they take their daily bath in the river nearby, which affords marvelous photo opportunities. Bath time is enjoyed by all elephants, young and old alike and it is a good time to closely observe their tightly knit family structure. Daily feeding times – 9.15 am, 1.15 pm, and 5.00 pm. bathing times – 10.00 am, 2.00 pm, and 4.00 pm.

Thereafter visit the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya, where a rare collection of tropical exotic and indigenous flora including the famous Orchid House could be viewed. Royal Botanical Gardens attracts 2 million visitors annually. The Garden boasts of more than 4000 species of plants, including orchids, spices, medicinal plants and palm trees. Attached to it is the National Herbarium.

Esala Perahera Festival
Kandy is also popular for its annual religious festival known as the Esala Perahera where the inner casket covering the tooth relic of the Buddha is taken in a grand procession through the streets of the city. This year the procession falls in August.

By 17:00 be seated at the viewing gallery to enjoy the ‘Kandyan Perahera’ procession. Festival features the graceful and rhythmic dancers and drummers and colorfully dressed elephants. Festival starts approximately after 19:00 based on the auspicious time and lasts till about 22:00.

Drive back to the hotel.

    Day 05 – Sinharaja / Deniyaya

    After breakfast check out of the hotel. Proceed to Deniyaya, located on the border of the Sinharaja Forest Reserve. It is the least disturbed and biologically unique lowland rain forest remaining in Sri Lanka. It is a treasure trove of endemic species including trees, insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Because of the dense vegetation wildlife is not as easily seen as at dry zone national parks as Yala. Bird watching is particularly interesting as it is home to 95% of the endemic birds of Sri Lanka. Commence a trek in the Forest accompanied by a trekker.

    Day 06 – Nuwara Eliya

    After breakfast check out of the hotel. Proceed to Nuwara Eliya. En route, visit a tea plantation and a tea factory. At the tea factory, witness the process of manufacture of tea from plucking of the green leaves to packing of the processed tea which is mainly meant for export markets.

    The beautiful town of Nuwara Eliya, set in the heart of Tea country and situated 1890 meters above sea level, is where the British succeeded in creating an English countryside with homes in styles from Georgian to Queen Anne with well kept lawns with hedges.

    On arrival in Nuwara Eliya, commence a sightseeing tour of the city. Visit the Golf Course (one of the finest 18 holes Golf courses in Asia), the Hill club and drive around the man-made Lake Gregory.

    Day 07 – Horton plains / Nuwara Eliya

    Rise up early, pack your breakfast and at 05:30 am leave for Horton plains. A van takes you to the entrance of Horton Plains. It is the highest plateau in the country and one of the very important National parks in Sri Lanka especially for its topographical variations. It has unique vegetation and is famous for many rare and endemic highland birds. The most awesome physical feature of the Horton Plains is the escarpment that falls 880 meters to the lowlands of the southern region of the island. Aptly known as the ‘World’s End’ the view from the precipice of the countryside below towards the south coast is spectacular.

    Return to the hotel in Nuwara Eliya upon completion.

    After a short break, proceed to Ella. It is Famous for the Ella Gap – a gap in the mountains where you can see all the way up to the ocean and the Rawana Waterfall, a sight to behold with a scenic backdrop of mountains and valleys. Rawana Falls is featured in the Rawana mythology, where Sita is said to have bathed at this waterfall while she was in captivity. Ella is also a base for plenty of trekking expeditions to the surrounding countryside and offers plenty of beautiful scenery and waterfalls.

    Return to the hotel in Nuwara Eliya.

    Day 08 – Beruwala

    After breakfast check out of the hotel. Proceed to Beruwala, delightfully located along one of the finest beaches on the South West coast of the island (Bentota Beach is 10 km off). Check in to the beach hotel on arrival.

    Day 09 – Beruwala / Galle

    After breakfast spend the morning hours at leisure.

    At around noon, leave for Galle – the capital of the southern province is a city with a colorful history.

    Commence an excursion in the Dutch Fort: the magnificent Dutch fort is the most popular attraction of the town and is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. 400 year old Dutch atmosphere is still very much alive around the fort and amidst its many historical buildings not invaded by the skyscrapers. The earliest European administrative centre of Sri Lanka was the major port and the largest city until the British shifted the port to Colombo. The City of Galle had been the European administrative centre over 4 centuries.

    Return to the hotel in Beruwala. Spend the rest of the day at leisure.

    Day 10 – Beruwala / Airport

    Now that you are at the end of your journey with us, after breakfast your chauffeur will comfortably take you to the international airport in time for your departure flight.
